Christof van der Berg is a South African musician and multidisciplinary artist whose work is rooted in memory, storytelling, and a deep connection to place. Spanning a variety of creative disciplines, his work seeks to transform ordinary experiences into enduring artistic narratives.

Born on a salt farm in South Africa’s Free State, Christof van der Berg is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans music, visual art, design, and live performance. The landscapes, characters, and stories of his childhood continue to shape much of his creative world.

As a teenager, he gained early recognition after winning a prestigious piano competition in Hollywood and receiving the Premier’s Award in the same year. This marked the beginning of a creative journey that would take him far beyond the salt pans of his youth.

After spending two years in London, where he worked as both a musician and visual artist, Christof went on to live and perform in Ireland, presenting his original one-man theatre production, Portraits of a Time in Bohemia. He later spent nine months in Mallorca as a member of Il Quattro, performing extensively while continuing to develop his distinctive artistic voice.

Alongside his work as a pianist and singer, Christof has established himself as a visual artist, creating paintings, sculptures, and design pieces rooted in memory, place, and storytelling. These disciplines often intersect, forming a body of work that moves freely between sound, image, and narrative.

He is the creator of Shades of Africa, a celebrated stage production that brings together South Africa’s languages and musical traditions in a vibrant live experience. The production has toured widely and has collaborated with symphony orchestras to great acclaim.

Today, Christof continues to create and perform in South Africa and abroad, developing artistic works that transform memory into beauty and ordinary lives into enduring stories.
